Gratitude and Service

Luther Education

Christian Education

I have come that they (sheep) may have life,
and that they may have it more abundantly. (John, 10:10)

Luther Gakuin offers a variety of Christian-based educational activities. At the heart of
these activities is the school motto, “Gratitude and Service,” and the Bible verse,
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest.” (John 10:10b)

The word “life” in the Bible refers to “us living in relation to others.” No one can live alone.
Our “lives” exist today because they were created by God, nurtured and supported through relationship with others.

To be grateful for this life that has been nurtured, and to live a life of gratitude and service is
strongly encouraged; This life of
“gratitude and service” is the way Jesus Christ wants us to
live, so that we “live life to the full.”

In this spirit, we aim to support each student in the realization that they are loved and alive,
and to be grateful for everything that supports them, and to grow into individuals who can
contribute to this world by respecting and serving others.

English Education

To nurture the ability to live in this age of globalization

Luther Gakuin, formerly known as Kyushu Jo Gakuin, was founded in 1926 by Ms. Martha
B. Akard, a missionary from the United States. Since then, many foreign teachers have
been involved in the education of the school, teaching classes in English and conducting
Christian-related activities. From the beginning of Kyushu Jo Gakuin, English has been a
part of everyday life. It eventually became known as “KyuJo, the school of English,”
leading English education in Kumamoto for a long time.

Kyushu Jo Gakuin established a sister school relationship with Immanuel College in
Adelaide, Australia in 1990, and a relationship with Oak Grove Lutheran High School in the
U.S. in 2001. Since then, many students have taken advantage of the programs, acquiring
not only English proficiency but also international character, and are now living and working
worldwide. After changing its name to Luther Gakuin in 2001, the school was designated to
study the methods of English teaching in 2005, known as a Super English High School, or
SELHi, under the Ministry of Education. It allowed Luther Gakuin to develop a unique
English educational program that is still continuing to evolve.

the final decision is made by the school based on student scores and space availability.

General Course

Students take a variety of subjects without a
specific focus. This course is designed to
meet students’ future plans accordingly.
Extra curricular classes are optional in this course.

Music and Art Course

Students take many fine arts classes or music
classes depending on their emphasis.
This course is designed to foster students’
talent in fine arts or in music.
Students are encouraged to aim for higher
education in fine arts and music.

Special Advanced Course

for prestigious Japanese universities and
overseas immersion program.
